Florida secures spot in College World Series

Gainesville, FL (Sports Network) - The Florida Gators earned a spot in the 2011 College World Series thanks to an 8-6 victory over Mississippi State on Sunday in the Gainesville Super Regional.

The Gators topped the Bulldogs in two of the three contests this weekend, and join North Carolina and Vanderbilt -- who both earned berths on Saturday -- in college baseball's season-ending series.

Daniel Piggott hit two homers and drove in three runs, while Mike Zunino, Preston Tucker and Vickash Ramjit also went deep for Florida.

Nick Vickerson hit a three-run homer among his two hits and drove in four for MSU, while Brent Brownleee drove in the other two runs in defeat.

UC Irvine 6, Virginia 4 (Charlottesville Super Regional)

Charlottesville, VA (Sports Network) - Jordan Leyland's two-run double came during a three-run eighth inning, as UC Irvine rallied past Virginia, 6-4, to send the Charlottesville Super Regional to a deciding contest on Monday.

The Anteaters trailed 3-0 and 4-3 in the game, and rebounded nicely after lightning delayed the contest for over two hours. UC Irvine's offense showed lifr after a 6-0 defeat to the Cavaliers in Saturday's opening contest.

John Hicks drove in a pair of runs and Kenny Swab drove in the other for Virginia.

Florida State 23, Texas A&M 9 (Tallahassee Super Regional)

Tallahassee, FL (Sports Network) - Stuart Tapley homered twice and drove in five runs as Florida State staved off elimination with a 23-9 victory over Texas A&M on Sunday in the Tallahassee Super Regional.

Justin Gonzalez finished 2-for-3 with a home run, six RBI and three runs scored for the Seminoles, who scored in seven of their nine at-bats in the rout.

Jayce Boyd went 4-for-4 with a homer, three RBI and scored five times for Florida State, which dropped a 6-2 decision on Saturday.

Gregg Alcazar and Brandon Wood each drove in a pair of runs for the Seminoles. Matt Juengel added two hits, an RBI and a run scored in the loss.

Game 3 takes place on Monday.
